A few days after Zac was born, I got to see him again for his newborn session. He was so tiny! I loved getting to use all of my new blankets and diaper covers :) He was so good to us - hardly cried at all and was nice and sleepy!

He even gave us a little smile!

This session was, hands down, my all-time favorite. It was my very first birth experience and I was SO nervous. I've been interested in birth photography for a while, but wasn't sure how to approach someone to be my guinea pig. Here is where family comes in! :) I talked with my sister in law and she agreed to let me document the birth of her third - and last - baby boy. I am so glad she did! It was absolutely amazing and I am so happy to finally be offering birth photography to my clients!

Each birth session comes with a DVD slideshow of all images from your session. Below is the slideshow of baby Zac's birth. (Please note that while these images don't show anything graphic and are probably safe to view at work or in front of children, they ARE images of the birthing process.)

Get comfortable, it's about 15 minutes long. I promise, it's worth it! Enjoy!

Sophie's fabulous 1st Birthday party was held at Circa 1840, an amazing restaurant in downtown Georgetown that is owned by Sophie's parents. I loved all of the pink & orange decorations! (And borrowed their pom-pom idea for a birthday I was helping plan a few weeks later :) Thanks!)

These first two are actually pages from their album design. Everything was adorable! The birthday girl's Mom made the "Happy Birthday" banner, and her aunt made the cakes!

Melissa and Emily own Between Friends - a women's consignment boutique and gift shop in downtown Georgetown. They wanted some updated family photos to hang around the store, so we headed downtown last weekend for a double family session. With 4 adults, 5 kids and 90+ degree heat it was quite an adventure! Here are a few of my favorites.

A few weeks ago, I was asked to photograph a birthday party. I had never done anything like that before, but I am SO glad I was able to go! Miles' mom, Erin, put together the most amazing party. Every detail was absolutely perfect!

There was a magician, a pony, cotton candy, balloon animals, face painting, popcorn, snow cones and an adorable birthday cake.

Here is the handsome birthday boy! He is such a cutie - I love his blue eyes and blonde curls.

My little sister, Hannah, will be turning 16 in October so my mom wanted to do a mini-session to get some updated photos of her. Since we will be doing her senior portrait session next summer, we decided to just do a few headshot type photos this time. I love how they turned out!

I couldn't decide if I liked these next two better in black & white or color, so you get both!

A Float Wrap is a new, unique option to display images. Float Wraps are similar to Gallery Wraps or Standouts in that they add dimension by extending out from the wall. They are made with a photographic print that is wrapped around masonite to create a thin wrap. The prints are protected with a matte laminate. There is also padding between the print and the masonite to give the front of the Float Wrap a raised, elegant look and feel. The back of the Float Wrap is complete with a black paper backing and a black 3/4" thick gatorboard block that allows the Float Wrap to extend out from the wall. Last night I met up with the Anderson family at the Japanese Gardens in Georgetown. They have adorable 14 month old twin boys who are as cute as can be. When this was the first shot, I knew it was going to be a great session!

I thought Erica did an amazing job choosing the outfits for their family portrait. Their outfits all coordinated, but weren't too 'matchy.' She also brought the perfect props - these adorable wooden pull toys.

I can tell the boys apart, but I have a hard time remembering which is Evan and which is Jason. I'll get it right one of these days, Erica! :)

I know this is mean, but I just love this one :) They were mad that we had taken their books away.

10 on Tuesday - Georgetown Kentucky Photographer

1. I always forget about 10 on Tuesday until it is a day other than Tuesday. (Which explains why this is only the second one I have done.)

2. I have a session with 14 month old twin boys later today - so excited!

3. We had a very un-patriotic July 4th. Lazy morning at home, early dinner at P.F. Changs, then Blake took me to see The Proposal.

4. Chicken lettuce wraps and Mongolian beef are my new favorite foods. I think I could eat them every day.

5. Are you a fan of Redbox on Facebook? I am, and yesterday I got a code for a free rental!

6. I was feeling lazy and sent my husband to pick up the movie, which meant there was no telling what he would come home with. He surprised me and brought home Confessions of a Shopaholic! It was really cute.

7. It scares me a little bit how much I relate to the main character in that movie :)

8. How nice is my husband to endure 2 chick flicks in a row? He's a keeper.

9. We are working on some new things to offer our clients, including new products and 'Baby's 1st Year' plans. I can't wait until everything is finished and I can share details!

10. In 12 short days I will be lounging in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Back in June (yes, I'm behind on my blogging again!) I made a little trip to Chattanooga, TN to spend some time with my family. While I was there my gorgeous cousin, Emily, was kind enough to model for me. I desperately needed to update the senior section of my portfolio, and she did a great job! She even brought along her friend, Hayden. It was a very hot day, but they were troopers and were the perfect models! Here are a few of my favorite shots from our afternoon at Coolidge Park.

Like my last post, this isn't quite a sneak peek since the family has had their proof gallery for several weeks. The Smith family was my first session after coming back from Florida. We met at the beautiful Henry Clay Estate and I couldn't believe how cooperative Hunter and Taylor were for us! They are naturals in front of the camera.

The main reason for this session was to get some updated portraits of Miss Taylor, so we got lots of great shots of her alone. I love her little smile!

I am so behind on my blogging! After our date night tonight, my husband and I did a little shopping at Target. While we were there, we met the cutest little family and somehow started talking about photography. (Hi Target family! :) ) After I gave them my business card, I remembered that I desperately needed to update the blog! I have several sessions to catch up on, but I'll start with the Lord family. While I was in Florida (The first week of May!!! Told you I was behind!) I had the pleasure of hanging out with Roman, Joshua and their parents at an amazing park in Lakeland. Their mom, Sarah, wanted lots of candid shots of them just playing and being boys, which was a good thing since they had no interest in me whatsoever :) This isn't really a sneak peek since I posted their proof gallery several weeks ago, but they are just too cute to not post!

sophie: 3 months - georgetown lexington kentucky photographer

I can't believe Sophie is already 3 months old. (Actually, she's 4 months old now!) It seems like it wasn't that long ago she was still in her mama's tummy. I loved being able to spend a whole week with her while we were in Florida! We were there for her first Easter and I think we've decided to make being there for Easter a new tradition :)

Here are a few of my favorites from Sophie's 3 month portrait session. When I go back to Florida next week, we will be doing a family session so be sure to check back for that!

At first glance, I thought it was Sara's fingers on Sophie's side... but it's baby rolls :) Love it!

I'm such a blog slacker! It's been a very busy few weeks. We got home from our trip to Florida on Sunday, and I'll be leaving to go back next Tuesday! I'm so excited to be going back, but it has been a little overwhelming trying to get everything done. Enough about that... :)

While I was in Florida I got to hang out with the adorable Cox family. Miss Hannah is just the cutest little thing! I've actually already posted their gallery, so this isn't really a sneak peek. They were just too cute not to blog!

10 on Tuesday - Georgetown Kentucky Photographer

I probably won't remember to do this every week, but here is my very first 10 on Tuesday post! (Thanks to Lyndsay for the idea!)

1. Tonight we are having dinner at Olive Garden and I CAN'T WAIT!

2. Sunday it was in the 70's and gorgeous. I wore a short sleeved shirt and flip flops and wasn't the least bit cold. Today it is in the high 30's and snowing. I do not like snow.

3. In less than 72 hours I will be leaving Kentucky and driving to Florida. (It's not snowing in Florida!)

4. Last night I attended a photography seminar. I'm so excited to start implementing all the new ideas I got while there!

5. I got my wedding ring cleaned on Sunday and I love how sparkly it is now!

6. I'm almost positive this was invented just for me!

7. I love etsy. A few of my current favorites: Felt brownie camera, Decoupage trees wall art, Cute felt bookmarks, Hand painted Easter baskets and pretty much anything in this shop.

8. I have our tax return all ready to go, I just have to send it in! This was the first year with the business, so it was very different than previous years!

9. It's harder than I thought to think of 10 things.

10. Just a reminder: We are going to Florida and will be out of the office starting Friday, April 10th at 2pm. We will back in the office to return all phone calls and emails on Monday the 20th.

11. One extra :) Be sure to check the blog next week for several 'sneak peek' posts! As long as the weather cooperates with us, we will be sharing a beach maternity session, a fun outdoor 2 year session and Sophie's 3 month session. It will be a busy week!

Meet maggie - Georgetown Kentucky Photographer

I don't normally post personal stuff on this blog, but I think it's time to change that! My personal blog hasn't been updated in months, and this blog isn't updated as often as it should be. Hopefully by combining the blogs I can remedy both problems! It also gives me an excuse to post photos of my ridiculously cute puppy, Maggie :) Since you will probably be seeing a lot of her on this blog, I figured I should introduce you!

We got Maggie in October of 2005, about 3 months after we got married. She was born on August 5th, while we were on our honeymoon. She was SO tiny -- less than 2 lbs. -- and she fit in the palm of my hand.

This was taken the day we got her. Oh how I wish she had stayed that little!

Maggie loves Santa Claus,

but not bath time.

Her favorite baseball team is the Boston Red Sox.

She is the most spoiled Chihuahua I know.

If you can't already tell, pets are members of the family around here. That means they get birthday parties, clothes and are involved in family photo shoots. (I just ordered the photo above as a 16x20!) If you feel the same way, feel free to bring your pet along to your session! Be sure to let us know ahead of time so Maggie can send the appropriate treats to share!

Tented Desk Calendar

Our Tented Desk Calendars are 7x5" in size with spiral binding along the top seam. A monthly calendar and one vertical image is displayed on each page. With the ability to choose the starting month, you're able to order it any time throughout the year!

52-week calendars

Our 52-Week Calendar is 8x6" in size with spiral binding along the side seam. One horizontal image (on the left) and a weekly calendar (on the right) is displayed for each page. Choose the starting month for your calendar and personalize dates with special occasions.

New lab, new products - Georgetown Kentucky Photographer

Our goal is to always offer the highest quality products available. With that in mind, we recently made the decision to switch printing labs. We have been ordering all of our custom cards through White House Custom Colour (WHCC) but now all prints will be from WHCC as well!

We are very excited about the switch and know you will be, too! Their price structure is a bit different than our previous labs, so we have updated our price sheets to reflect the switch. You can find all of the new pricing information by clicking here, or by clicking 'investment' in the sidebar on the right.

One exciting thing about switching labs is that we have a few new products to offer! Our favorites are the new accordion albums. They are 3"x3" and make the perfect brag book for your purse!

They show 10 prints and can be covered in your choice of several colors in either canvas or eurohyde. The come as a set of 3 identical books for only $45 - additional books in the same design can be ordered for $10 each.

Beautiful Album - Georgetown, Kentucky photographer

A few months ago, we showed you one of the new products we are offering - hard cover albums. The post showed you some layouts, but at the time I didn't have photos of the actual album. Today I do! Please keep in mind that I am not a product photographer :) The photos don't do the book justice - it is beautiful! This particular book is 8"x8", but it is also available in 5"x5" and 10"x10". For pricing and more information, click here.

The cover features your favorite image from your session.

The front, back and spine of the cover are completely customizable! The thin white page you see towards the front of the album is a vellum page that protects the first (and last) page of the album. The actual pages are nice and thick.

A close-up of the hinged pages, which allow the album to lay flat.

Unlike some other photo books, this album has a very small gutter. (Where the pages meet in the middle.) None of your page is lost in the seam!

I just love how this album turned out, and hope the client does as well!

I am finally home after my amazing (and long!) trip to Florida. You may remember the maternity shoot I did a few months back for my friend Sara. The main reason for my trip was that Sara had her baby! I am so excited that I was able to be around for Sophia's first few weeks of life. She is the most perfect, gorgeous baby I have ever seen! Of course, Aunt Sarah isn't at all biased :) Here are a few of my favorites from my weeks with the new family of 3, but to see ALL of the photos check out the slideshow below. I had a nice, long entry and Blogger ate it. :(

Back in October, we had a mini session with my husband's nephews as a Christmas gift for their mom. We had a photo tile made for her, and it turn out so beautiful! (I, of course, forgot to take a picture before I wrapped it.) I've been having to keep these photos under wraps so the surprise wasn't ruined, but I can share them now! I was so pleased with how they turned out, especially considering we only had about 10 minutes to get them.

I've been on a bit of a black and white kick lately, as you'll see from these images. You'll also see my pretty new image border!

My best friend Sara is 8 months pregnant with her first baby, a little girl named Sophia Grace. Sara lives way too far away in Florida, but we met up this weekend in Tennessee for our college's homecoming and were able to schedule a little time for her maternity photo session. I hope when/if I'm ever pregnant I will look as great as Sara does! It doesn't look like she has gained an ounce anywhere but her belly and she is just so darn cute!

October 16th was my last day at my 'day job.' Since I had lots of extra free time, I went to Michigan to spend the week with my parents and sister. I ended up getting sick the day I got there and actually had to stay 2 extra days until I was well enough to drive the 6 hours home. I'm still not feeling 100%, but thankfully I'm much better. Even though I lost my voice and could barely get out a whisper, we still managed to squeeze in a few mini-shoots :) My mom makes a wonderful assistant and I sure do wish she could come with me to all of my shoots!

First up was the family dog, Zeke. He is the most perfect dog in the whole world, and also happens to be super cute! (Be prepared for image overload! I had a hard time narrowing down

my favorites.)

This one is my absolute favorite!

Later that day, it was bath time. As you can tell, Zeke was not too happy about it.

My parents have been hosting a foreign exchange student from Korea since she was a senior in high school. Christine is now a sophomore in college, and was kind enough to let me use her as a model for my portfolio. A few of the shots we got are some of my favorites I've ever captured! We had gorgeous fall leaves as a backdrop and perfect light.

The next day, we headed out on my parents' property to get a few images of Christine in her traditional Korean outfit. We all braved the slippery hill around the lake to get to the dock. Christine even got a shoe full of muddy water! But it was certainly worth it to get these beautiful images. I loved the contrast of the pink against the fall leaves.

We ran out of time to get a full session with my sister, but we were able to get a few pictures in between outfit and location changes during Christine's session. Those will be coming in a separate post because I think I have filled this one to capacity :) Do I win an award for longest blog post ever??

Ornaments & photo tiles

We just signed up with a new vendor and now offer custom photo ornaments and 6x6 photo tiles. These would make great Christmas gifts for anyone on your list!

The ornaments are available in a 2"x3", 3"x2" and 3"x3" flat glass, and will have a perfectly coordinating ribbon at the top. My favorite part is the beads that are added at the bottom! Ornaments are double sided - you can add a second photo or words for no additional cost!! These are 100% handcrafted. The soldering technique used is not meant to be perfect - it gives each item its own character and style.

The photo tiles are 6"x6" Travertine tumbled tiles. The back is the same rock and the corners and sides are left naturally rough. Your full 6"x6" photo will be sealed on to the tile, distressed and perfectly displayed on a fold out black easel. If you chose an embellished tile, just let us know any themes or certain color schemes you would like to be used and we will incorporate that.

Ella Rose - Cleveland Tennessee newborn photographer

Baby Ella was the youngest person I have done a session for so far. I had so much fun getting to use all of my baby 'props!' I have known Ella's mom since we were both toddlers, and its crazy to think that we are old enough to get married and have babies!

I absolutely love this photo, even though Ella is crying. They are such a sweet little family!

New Mac & Photo shoot!

In my last post I mentioned that my computer was 'mad' at me. Well, while we were in Tennessee for Labor Day weekend, it finally gave up and totally crashed. I ordered a new MacBook Pro and it came in a few days ago. I just LOVE it! (Although, its definitely taking some getting used to.) Any Mac tutors out there want to help me out?? :)

While we were in Tennessee my husband and I had the opportunity to have a photo session with the amazingly talented Rich Smith. He did an incredible job! You can check them out here. Be sure and leave him some blog love!

I'm currently in the process of transferring all my files and programs from my old computer to the new one. Its getting done - slowly but surely! Everything is taking me 5 times longer than it should, so I'm getting a little behind. 50th Anniversary

My computer has been mad at me the last few days and isn't letting me burn CDs. My family has been patiently waiting to see the photos from my grandparent's 50th Anniversary party from last weekend. I thought I would give them a little sneak peek here :) If I learned anything from the experience, I learned that I am NOT an event photographer. I'll stick to families and kiddos!

Wednesday I had the chance to hang out with the adorable Elizabeth. Her mom, Sara, is a good friend of mine and my fabulous hairdresser! (If you live in the Georgetown area, give Sara a call at Sutra Salon. She's amazing!) We wanted to get a few shots of Elizabeth before her second birthday. I can't believe how big she is getting! It seems like just a few months ago I was photographing her 1st birthday party! We had fun hanging out in her backyard - especially the playhouse her Dad built! Elizabeth wasn't really in the mood to have her picture taken, but I love the shots I got of her just playing and being a fabulous (almost) 2 year old. Enjoy!

I had an 11 day break from my day job starting July 4th, and I got to spend the entire first day with Miss Emma and her wonderful family. Emma, along with her mom & dad (Christa & Mike) came from California. Mike's parents, sister, niece & nephew came from North Carolina. We all met up at Christa's mom & stepdads house in Kentucky. (We missed you, Aunt Sara!) Emma sure is blessed to have so many people that love her!

I had so much fun getting to hang out all day, and photograph such a beautiful family. I ended up with about 400 pictures, so I had a hard time narrowing down my favorites! Prepare yourself for picture overload :)

Emma is one of the happiest babies I've ever been around. She was so good, and so patient with me snapping away in her face all day long.

During one of Emma's naps, (and a break from the rain!) we headed outside for a mini session with just Christa and Mike.

Before I left, the rain had finally stopped and it was gorgeous outside! We got a few family shots that I just love.

Anna and Austin were so good with their new cousin! It was precious to see how gentle they were with her. This whole family is so photogenic!

These are some of the last shots of the day, and definately some of my favorites. Check out those killer blue eyes!

Sunday I drove from Kentucky to Chattanooga, Tennessee to spend the rest of my week off with my grandparents and I will be here until Saturday the 12th. This past weekend Blake and I went to TN with a few friends for a long weekend getaway. We went to a Casting Crowns concert, a Chattanooga Lookouts game, and we even got to eat at Bea's! On Saturday, we had the chance to meet up with the oh-so talented Rich Smith. He brought along his wife Heather and beautiful baby Alana. We had a great long lunch at Panera while I bombarded Rich with questions :-) Here are a few fun shots I borrowed from their blog.

Digital technology is brilliant. The digital revolution has brought amazing flexibility and amazing amounts of control for the photographer, the hobbyist, the professional, the amateur. With flexibility comes a price though. Camera equipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in its lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing those images, the time it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into all of this.

Even though you pay $1.99 for a print at your local drugstore and paying for film is pretty much a thing of the past (although you still pay for memory) you may be wondering why you may pay upwards of $40, 50, 70, 90 for a custom photography print. Some photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:
"How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at the local drug store?"

The answer is multifaceted and has a lot to do with the time, aforementioned equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of the photographer, expertise and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

TIME of the CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:
Approaching it from a time standpoint, for instance let’s imagine if you will that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love and that is travelling an hour to your on location session. TIme break down:

-session prep time (30 mins - 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehicle checks)
-one hour travel time TO session
-15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home
-90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject
-one hour travel time FROM session
-30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer
-30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images
-2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images
-1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering
-2-3 hours time with client for ordering images
-1 hour sorting through and checking order
-30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery
-30 minutes-1 hour getting order shipped
-any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues

As you can see, average client time for a session ranges from just under 13 hours to 19 hours dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to your session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session.

COSTS of the CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:
Regarding equipment costs, a good quality professional camera with a selection of good optical quality lenses and digital storage mediums and computer set up can run from $10,000-$30,000 costs dependent on the photographer. Even though you can purchase a really good quality digital SLR for about $2100 there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography can run up $900 to $2500. A dependable computer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run $2500 to $8000 dependent on the photographer.

Then come lab costs for specialty products. A good photographer knows the lab is integral to their success. Photography labs dedicated to the professional photographer often cost more and offer a range of products that allows the custom photographer to continually offer new, innovative products for you, the discerning client.

Discussion of other costs of running a photography business could take awhile so we’ll skip the intricate details. There is of course much more: including costs of running the business, taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownership of a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising/marketing, costs of sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, etc.

APPLES to ORANGES:
Often times clients will mention to their photographer that X studio in the mall/department store only charges $25 for an 8×10 or they may mention other things related to discount photography chains. The fact is those discount chains make their money on volume, not on customized 1:1 service. According to several articles at the time, did you know that in February 2007 a rather well known discount department store that started in Arkansas closed down 500 of their portrait studios across the nation? The reason is simple, you cannot make money on 99¢ "professional" prints if you do not sell enough of them. Interestingly enough - those same studios that offer the loss leader packages often charge much much more for their a la carte pricing (as high as $40-50 for an 8×10). The whole reason the big department stores began offering portrait studios in the first place was to get you, the savvy consumer, in through their door so that you could spend more money with them in other departments. Your "PORTRAITS" are considered the true "loss leader".

Going to a chain studio, as a consumer, you don’t have the benefit of 1:1 attention for 2 hours at your home where your child is allowed to explore, play and be comfortable in their home environment, nor do you get the experience that many custom photographers are known for or the lovely captures of natural expressions. You simply get a bare bones, "SAY CHEESE" experience. Keep this in mind when selecting a photographer.

REPUTATION/EXPERTISE of the PHOTOGRAPHER:
Being in demand, being well known for quality work, having a good reputation often costs time on the photographer’s part. Their expertise comes at a cost, their time learning their craft and learning the intricacies of lighting and the commitment put forth on their end to create a persona about their business that oozes professionalism. A great number of photographers go a very long time from the time that they purchase their first good camera to making money at the business of photography. Many photographers, when first starting out, rush in thinking that the business will be easily profitable in no time, how expensive could it be to get a camera and use it to create their dream? They often neglect to factor in the cost of business, the cost of equipment, software, back ups, etc..

Being of sound reputation, a better professional photographer knows that they must always reinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch. To create good work good equipment, reliable equipment, back up equipment is a necessity. The photographer who desires to be known as better/best/unparalelled reputation-wise knows that the most important thing they can do for their business is reliability and dependability. This is how reputations get built. Good work often is a wonderful side product of building that good reputation.

I hope this (lengthy) article helps shed some light on WHY a custom photographer is a better choice for your family’s memories. The photographs that are produced as a result of the professionalism and dedication that your photographer has will be cherished for a lifetime (or more) and great thought and consideration should be placed into hiring who is right for your family’s most precious investment.
